Concerns about the vitality of the pediatric workforce have increased among child health experts in the United States. To identify and address these concerns, the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs (AMSPDC) engaged a group of national experts, including leaders from the American Board of Pediatrics and held a summit at the annual AMSPDC meeting in February 2020. Among several important considerations, workforce shortages and geographic maldistribution of certain subspecialties were considered particularly concerning because they potentially compromise access and care for children who need pediatric subspecialty expertise.
