Pediatricians who need eight hours of education before obtaining or renewing their controlled substance license with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) can enroll in training opportunities that also provide Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit for Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (MOC Part 2).

The eight-hour training must be provided by an accredited group. The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) fits the requirement because it is a joint CME provider with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

The changes were made to provide patients and families with additional data that might facilitate informed decision-making when selecting a physician.

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) announced today the appointment of John A. Barnard, MD, as Interim President and CEO. Dr. Barnard, who most recently served as Chair-Elect of the ABP’s Board of Directors, assumes the role formerly held by outgoing President and CEO Judy Schaechter, MD, MBA.

Dr. Barnard brings extensive experience in pediatrics and leadership to the interim role. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Ohio State University and Chief of Pediatrics and President of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He maintains board certification in Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Certification Exams

Pediatric fellows certified by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) who wish to become certified in either Sleep Medicine or Hospice and Palliative Medicine may soon apply to take certification examinations in these disciplines annually, beginning in 2023 for Sleep Medicine and 2024 for Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Although the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) administers these two subspecialty exams, ABP-certified pediatricians need to apply through the ABP. The ABP will have different registration dates.

In a move that surprised many, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) recognized the health care QI work of 727 board-certified pediatricians last month by granting them “instant” Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit. ABP staff awarded the credit by reviewing posters and oral abstracts at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting.
