Question of the Week (QOW) Participation Approaches 21,000 in 2018

Monday, May 07, 2018

After the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) made enhancements last year to its Question of the Week (QOW) self-assessment activity, participation in the popular activity has risen to nearly 21,000 board-certified pediatricians.

QOW participants can earn 10 Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part 2 points and 10 CME hours (starting in 2017) for every 20 questions they answer correctly. Each week’s question includes a pediatric case study, an abstract with commentary, and hyperlinked references. Because questions remain in an archive and can be answered for credit for up to three years from the release date, participants can skip some weeks or answer more than one question other weeks. And they can earn all of their MOC Part 2 points with QOW, if desired.

“You can read the case studies and answer the questions anywhere and anytime,” says James A. Stockman III, MD, editor-in-chief of QOW. “As long as you can access the internet, you can be working at your desk, clinic, home, or even relaxing at the beach.”

Dr. Stockman served as President and CEO of the ABP from 1992 to 2013. He has authored more than 200 publications, including more than 40 books.

"We also try to make it fun,” adds Dr. Stockman. “At the end of each question, we provide bonus material, often in the form of a humorous anecdote or little-known fact. We call this the Medical Pearl.”

In addition to Dr. Stockman, Rebekah Burns, MD, and Paul Young, MD, complete the QOW editorial team. Dr. Burns is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Wash., and a board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Young is a Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Utah, past chair of the Pediatric Academic Societies Program Committee, and associate editor of Academic Pediatrics.
