Nichols To Receive Prestigious Society of Critical Care Medicine Award

David G. Nichols, MD, MBA, American Board of Pediatrics President and Chief Executive Officer, has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the Shubin-Weil Master Clinician/Teacher: Excellence in Bedside Teaching Award, presented annually by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).

Selected by the SCCM Past President’s Committee, each recipient must be, “a role model of excellence in both the teaching and ethical practice of critical care, recognized as an outstanding clinician/teacher, who, by example and leadership, substantially furthered the expert and appropriate use of life-support interventions,” according to criteria for the award.

“Letters from your former fellows provided substantial evidence of the tremendous influence you have made on them, personally and professionally,” SCCM President, J. Christopher Farmer, MD, wrote to Nichols, announcing the award.

Before becoming ABP President and CEO in 2012, Dr. Nichols was with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for 28 years, most recently as Vice Dean for Education. In this role, he oversaw all undergraduate and graduate medical education and training programs, as well as the medical library and international programs

Dr. Nichols earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University before completing his MD, with honors, at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. While at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Nichols finished his pediatric residency and fellowship training, serving as chief resident. He later received his MBA from the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School.

The SCCM will present its awards at the American College of Critical Care Medicine Convocation on Jan. 19, 2015, in Phoenix.
