Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Julia McMillan, MD, will present the second annual Stockman Lecture on Oct. 25 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition, being held this year in Washington, D.C. Dr. McMillan is Professor of Pediatrics, Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

In her address, titled “Mind the Gap – What’s Missing in the Education of Pediatricians,” Dr. McMillan will explore whether pediatric residents graduate with adequate training to meet the increasing behavioral and mental health needs of their patients.

“Children and families need our help,” she says. “Pediatricians in the 21st century must be educated to meet those needs.”

Dr. McMillan chairs the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Strategic Planning Committee, including a steering committee that is exploring the role of the general pediatrician in the care of developmental, behavioral, and mental health problems in children. She is a former chair of the ABP Board of Directors, medical editor of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Subboard, and has served on numerous ABP committees.

The Stockman Lecture was created by the AAP and ABP to honor Dr. James A. Stockman III upon his retirement as President and CEO of the ABP. Dr. Stockman presented the inaugural lecture at the AAP’s annual conference in 2014.
