Dr. Sherrel Leyton Hammar, 1931–2016

Dr. Sherrel HammarSherrel Leyton Hammar, MD, former committee and board member of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), died May 17, 2016, in Honolulu, HI. He was 84.

Between 1981 and 2001, Dr. Hammar volunteered for many roles at the ABP. He was an oral examiner, certifying exam committee member, certifying exam planning committee member, credentials committee chair, adolescent medicine subboard member, and Board of Directors member.

A native of Caldwell, ID, Dr. Hammer graduated from Caldwell High School in 1949, and went on to earn his BA in Biology from the College of Idaho in 1953.Attending the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Hammer earned his MD in 1957.

Dr. Hammar was Chief of Pediatrics at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, University of Hawaii, both in Honolulu.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hammar, daughter Kathy Pryor, son-in-law Dale Pryor, Richland, WA, and three grandchildren.
