ABP Expands CME, MOC Credit Opportunities

Pediatricians may earn MOC credit for many of the activities they are already participating in to expand their knowledge and to meet licensure and other professional obligations.

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) is now collaborating with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to further support pediatricians engaged in lifelong learning. Through this collaboration, pediatricians will be able to receive maintenance of certification (MOC) credit for lifelong learning and self-assessment (Part 2) when they participate in approved continuing medical education activities.

To date, more than 150 CME activities are already registered to offer ABP MOC Part 2 credit. This means that pediatricians may earn MOC credit for many of the activities they are already participating in to expand their knowledge and to meet licensure and other professional obligations.

“The variety of activities that qualify for MOC Part 2 credit is much broader,” said Kristi Gilreath, Director of MOC External Activities. “For example, Phoenix Children’s Hospital has registered its Grand Rounds with ACCME and because they give participants an assessment, we’re able to offer MOC as well as CME credit. Similarly, the American Society of Echocardiography is registered to offer MOC and CME credit for its interactive live webinar on three-dimensional echocardiography in congenital heart disease.”

This collaboration not only increases the types of activities for which Part 2 credit can be offered, but also expands the types of assessments allowed for MOC Part 2 credit. CME providers are no longer restricted to multiple choice, single best answer “quizzes.” Instead, both the evaluation mechanisms and passing standards may be determined by the provider, as appropriate to the activity and learner objectives.

As part of this collaboration, accredited CME providers will register CME activities for ABP MOC Part 2 credit at the time they submit the activities into the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS).  CME providers will report activity completions through PARS for pediatricians who complete activities approved for ABP MOC credit, and pediatricians will receive both CME and MOC Part 2 credit.  The MOC credit will appear automatically in the pediatrician’s ABP portfolio.

ABP diplomates may locate ABP MOC Part 2 activities by logging into their ABP Portfolio or by logging into ACCME’s CME Finder.
