Test Accommodations

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) provides reasonable and appropriate test accommodations to those who demonstrate a need and make a timely request. Test accommodations can be provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), for breastfeeding mothers, or for those who need to bring a personal item into an examination room, such as a medical device, medication, or comfort aid.

To request an accommodation, apply for your exam and your accommodation as early as possible during the application period, even if accommodations were received on a prior exam. You will not be able to schedule your exam until your request is either approved or withdrawn.

How to Apply for Exam Accommodations

New ADAAA Requests

  1. Read the Policy and Procedures for Applicants with Disabilities (PDF). Share them with the professional who will be preparing your documentation.

  2. Complete the Request Form for Test Accommodations — New Request (PDF) for the appropriate exam. Be sure to sign the Request Form where indicated.

  3. If appropriate, attach documentation describing previous test accommodations.

  4. Attach documentation of the disability and your need for accommodation. Compare your documentation with the information listed in the policy to ensure a complete submission. If there is a need for further verification of the disability or the need for accommodation, it is possible that the decision on granting the accommodation will be delayed until the next scheduled test administration.

  5. Submit the completed Request Form with supporting documentation to the ABP by the final registration deadline for initial certification exams and at least 60 days prior to the test date for MOC exams. The deadline to receive the request form and supporting documentation for Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Medical Toxicology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Pediatric Transplant Hepatology, Sleep Medicine, and Sports Medicine exams is the same as the registration deadline. Please contact the ABP if you have questions.

  6. Approved applicants do not schedule exam appointments online, but follow instructions provided in the approval email from the ABP. All Prometric Testing Centers in the United States comply with the ADAAA. The Prometric Special Conditions group works with the applicant and the ABP to determine needs and the best methods for accommodations.

Repeat ADAA Requests

If you received test accommodations for a previous ABP exam and would like to request the same accommodations as previously provided, please submit a completed Request Form for Test Accommodations — Repeat Request (PDF) by the final registration deadline for initial certification exams and at least 60 days prior to the test date for MOC exams. The deadline to receive the request form for Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Medical Toxicology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Pediatric Transplant Hepatology, Sleep Medicine, and Sports Medicine exams is the same as the registration deadline. Please contact the ABP if you have questions.

Breastfeeding Mothers

Submit the Breastfeeding Form to request 30 minutes of additional break time, per scheduled break, during the exam. Breast pumps may be stored in a personal locker, or stored at the testing center administrative desk.

Personal Items

Submit the Personal Item Form if you can demonstrate a need to bring a personal item into an exam room, such as a medical device, medication, or comfort aid that is not already listed as permitted on Prometric’s Pre-Approved Personal Items list (PDF).
