Secure Examination CME Credit

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) is not a CME-awarding organization; however, diplomates can apply for CME credit through the American Medical Association (AMA) for passing a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) examination. This process requires the completion of the AMA direct credit application and the requisite processing fee.

The following information has been provided to us by the AMA. Questions about this should be emailed to

Physicians are eligible to apply for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for specialty board certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board as follows:

  1. Twenty-five (25) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for certifications that occurred prior to September 1, 2010; 60 credits for certifications that occurred on or after September 1, 2010. Physician applicants requesting the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ should complete an application for direct credit and attach a copy of the specialty board notification letter.
  2. A three-year Physician Recognition Award (PRA) certificate. The PRA certificate recognizes the educational effort associated with successfully completing an ABMS board certification process. The certificate does not include the awarding of American Medical Association (AMA) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians requesting a PRA certificate should complete a PRA application and attach a copy of the specialty board notification letter.
