Professional Standing and Licensure (Part 1)

Professional Standing and Licensure (Part 1) of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) — the easiest part to achieve for most pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists — includes:

Licensure

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) requires that pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists hold a valid, unrestricted allopathic and/or osteopathic medical license in at least one jurisdiction in the United States, its territories or Canada.

  • If more than one license is held, all licenses must be valid and unrestricted.
  • Individuals practicing exclusively outside the United States, its territories or Canada, and who do not hold a U.S. or Canadian license, must provide proof of licensure in the country in which they practice.

Responsibility to Report Change in Licensure Status

Board-certified pediatricians must inform the Board in writing immediately upon any change in licensure status, including any restriction (disciplinary or not) placed on any medical license held.

  • If any medical license becomes invalid or restricted at any time, the Board may revoke the certificate(s).
  • When an encumbered license(s) becomes reinstated in full and a former board-certified pediatrician notifies the ABP, the physician may petition to enroll in MOC to regain certification.

The ABP receives periodic Disciplinary Action Notification reports from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), listing the actions by states against individual medical licenses.
