The American Board of Pediatrics requires physicians to satisfactorily complete residency training in general pediatrics before applying for certification in general pediatrics. The standard training requirement is 3 years; however, other pathways exist for physicians who wish to combine training in pediatrics with that of another specialty. In addition, special pathways are available to residents committed to an academic career as physician-scientists.
Residents may choose to pursue training in an approved program that offers combined training in pediatrics and another specialty. View information regarding these Combined Programs.
