Additional Information

What is the format of the ITE?

This exam is a three-hour internet-based test that includes approximately 150 multiple-choice questions. The ITE is not delivered remotely and the use of virtual computers is not permitted. Please contact your IT department to ensure your institution will not be using virtual machines during the test administration.

Who can order ITEs?

ITE can be ordered through the Program Portal.

The general pediatrics program director or coordinator must order the appropriate number of ITEs for all residents in their institution, including trainees in medicine-pediatrics, and other general pediatric combined disciplines, such as pediatrics-genetics, pediatrics-emergency medicine, and pediatrics-anesthesiology, etc. Please coordinate with the combined medicine-pediatrics program to ensure that you order for those residents, as the registration window cannot be extended.

It will be administered at the training program by the program director or the appropriate delegate.

Who can take the ITE?

Residents training during a core year in categorical pediatrics, medicine–pediatrics, and other general pediatric combined disciplines, such as pediatrics-genetics, pediatrics-emergency medicine, and pediatrics-anesthesiology, etc., are permitted to take the ITE. Chief residents who are completing their Pediatric R3 year or Med-Peds R4 year are eligible to take ITE.

Who cannot take the ITE?

The following is the list of trainees who cannot take the In-Training Examination. If an ineligible trainee takes the ITE, the exam will be voided, without a refund, and not scored.

  • A chief resident who has completed a categorical or a medicine-pediatrics residency.
  • A Peds-Neurology or Peds-Neurodevelopmental Disabilities resident who has completed the pediatrics portion of their training.
  • A Peds-Psychiatry-Child Psychiatry resident in their fifth year of training
  • An individual completing a supervised practice experience to regain eligibility to apply for the certification by the ABP.
  • An individual who will begin training after the ITE is administered.

When is the payment deadline?

ITE invoices forwarded for payment must be paid in full 30 days from the order date. The program may continue to purchase additional exams through the last business day in May. All payments must be received by the last business day in June.

Can I receive a refund or credit for unused exams?

No refunds or credits are granted if excess exams are ordered or a trainee was not able to participate in the ITE as planned.
