Exam Dates and Fees for Subspecialties

Subspecialty Initial Certification Exam Dates and Fees

Examinations Through 2021

Postponed 2020 Spring Exams (now scheduled in August)

All subspecialty initial certifying examinations that were scheduled to take place in March have been rescheduled for August. These exams are for Adolescent Medicine, Child Abuse Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Pediatric Nephrology. Fellows in these programs had the option to reschedule their exam for any one of four testing dates (on Aug. 3, 10, 13, and 20) in three different weeks to provide as much flexibility as possible.

COVID-19 exposure remains a risk as we approach these August test dates. The ABP has heard from candidates asking us to reschedule the exams and from candidates asking us to ensure that the exams are held as currently scheduled. To meet as many needs as we can, the ABP is allowing candidates to take the exam as scheduled, or they may cancel their exam reservation if they feel unsafe or unable to take the exam at a testing center in August. Candidates may cancel by contacting the ABP at sscert@abpeds.org. If you choose to cancel at least one week before your exam is scheduled, the ABP can provide you a full refund. You may cancel up until the day of the exam. However, if you do not notify us of the cancelation at least a week in advance of your exam date, you may be responsible to pay the seat fee of about $103, which Prometric charges.

Eligibility to take the exam will be extended by two years for all candidates who applied and were approved to take their exam this year if they choose to not take the exam in 2020. Your subspecialty exam will be given again in 2022.

Important Update for Candidates

  • Prometric has rescheduled a small number of subspecialty exam candidates from test centers due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. We apologize for the inconvenience and understand this may present a disruption. Please contact the ABP as soon as possible if you are experiencing difficulty securing another exam appointment.
  • Masks must be worn for the duration of your time in the Prometric test center. All Prometric staff will wear masks, and test centers will operate with enhanced cleaning protocols. Exam candidates who are ill on the day of their scheduled exam appointment should contact the ABP and should not go to the test center.
  • All exam candidates should be familiar with the updated Prometric test center policies which can be found here: https://www.prometric.com/covid-19-update/test-center-policies.
  • The total number of test takers will not affect the ABP’s ability to generate valid scores. There are equating and statistical techniques specifically designed for small sample sizes which we would employ. Scoring concerns should not drive your decision regarding testing in August. Your decision should be based solely upon whether you feel safe and your schedule.

See the communication (PDF) sent to August exam candidates and members of the pediatric community on July 30, 2020.
