Subspecialty Initial Certification Exam Dates and Fees

This page contains information about pediatric subspecialty exams that will take place through December 2021. Please click or scroll below to find the application due dates and other exam information you need:


Postponed 2020 Spring Exams (now scheduled in August) 

All subspecialty initial certifying examinations that were scheduled in March have been rescheduled for August. Fellows who were accepted to take an exam in Adolescent Medicine, Child Abuse Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, or Pediatric Nephrology may now schedule their exam for any one of the four available dates: Aug. 3, Aug. 10, Aug. 13, or Aug. 20, regardless of specific subspecialty. 


2020 Summer and Fall Exams

Registration and exam dates are updated as information becomes available. The deadline to register for ALL exams is 3 p.m. ET by the registration dates noted below.

Regular Registration: $2,900 (includes $750 processing fee)
Late Registration: $2,900 ($345 late fee waived in 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak)

Summer 2020 Exam Withdrawals: If you wish to withdraw your Sports Medicine application and receive the refundable exam fee, the ABP must receive a signed notification by June 4, 2020. The processing and late fees, if applicable, will be retained by the ABP. Fees are not transferable.

Fall 2020 Exam Withdrawals: If you wish to withdraw your application and receive the refundable exam fee, the ABP must receive a signed notification by Oct. 9, 2020. The processing and late fees, if applicable, will be retained by the ABP. Fees are not transferable.


*Computer or Technical Difficulties

Computer or technical issues, operator error, or difficulties arising from username or password problems, e.g., forgotten password or inability to log in to the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) application system due to an inconsistency with the spelling of names, must be resolved and the application completed and submitted before the 3 p.m. ET deadline. Please be aware that it can take up to 48 business hours (excluding weekends) to resolve certain technical difficulties. The ABP makes every effort to assist with these issues promptly; however, applicants are responsible for verifying their ability to apply well before the deadline. No exceptions will be allowed for applicants who miss the application deadline.


Test Accommodations

Applicants who require test accommodations must notify the ABP by submitting a completed New Request Form or Repeat Request Form.
